சாந்தி மந்திரம்
Preamble
As ordinary mortals, we humans can’t get away from actions. As long as we are alive, we have actions to perform. If we don’t have activity it means that we are dead. In our personal and professional lives , we need to get into a right frame of mind before commencing our actions. Only then we can expect better results. This has been the experience for every one of us.
That is the reason why in Indian Temples, we have outer corridors, inner corridors and a main assembly area before entering the Sanctum Sanctorum. We are expected to go around the corridors, get rid of undesirable feelings and intentions and then get into the main assembly area for prayers.
In Vedic tradition, this has been emphasized very clearly. For our study of Upanishads, we need to do the same thing. That process of getting into the correct frame of mind is through a pure prayer which means complete dedication and total surrender to the Omnipotent God. This is called Shanthi Mantra (Shanthi Sloka) and it aims to bring in peace to the mind before commencing the study.
Each Upanishad starts with a specific Shanthi Mantra to set our mind in the right perspective before we study the Upanishad. Let us now study the Shanthi Mantra for Mandukya Upanishad.

Understanding the Mantra
Each Shanthi Mantra starts with the word OM. In fact significant portion of the Upanishad is dedicated to OM. Here is a quick introduction to OM.
Opening Word - ॐ (ஓம்) OM:
This symbol is a sacred insignia that represents the Ultimate Reality, the omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, the primordial source for all existence and all being. Vedas call this source as Brahman or Paramatma, known as God to the Western world.
It is the audible manifestation of the transcendental Brahman. It represents the unmanifested and manifested nature of Brahman. That is why it also called as “Pranava” indicating that it is the “Praanaa”, the vital breadth that sustains us in our lives.
OM indicates the Divine sound representing Pranava, the source of life and is made out of the three letters A, U and M in Sanskrit. The syllable "Om" or "Aum" is of paramount importance in Hinduism. It is also considered to be the root mantra from which all other mantras emerge and to encapsulate the essence of the many thousands of verses of Hinduism’s holiest texts, the Vedas.
According to the Katha Upanishad (2.15),
OM is the “word which all the Vedas rehearse.”
First Part of the prayer:
1: OM, O Devas, May we Hear with our Ears what is Auspicious,
By chanting OM in the beginning, we have elevated ourselves to a mental plane from the mundane physical plane. We know what is auspicious when we are in the mental plane. So, the plea is to identify and tune into what is auspicious, by using ears. At a higher level, it is inner hearing or clairaudience. Accordingly, you either tune into what is auspicious or hear only auspicious!
2: O (Devas who are) Worthy of Worship, May we See with our Eyes what is Auspicious.
Similarly at that level we open our inner eyes and plead for visualization or sight of only that which are auspicious with the eyes.
3: With (Sense) Organs Steady and Body Praying
With healthy, steady, stable limbs of the body and with clairaudience and inner eyes (hearing and seeing at the mental plane), the body praying
4: ... May we Attain (i.e. Spend) the Lifespan allotted by the Devas (thus finding fulfillment in our lives).
The time or life span that is allocated by the Presiding Deva in our plan, must be fully utilized, by devotion, worshiping, working for God, for the benefit of the entire humanity, by hearing and seeing what is only appropriate. May we attain or gain all these (Vyashema), utilizing the given time in the manifested world optimally.
To come to this stage, we need help, guidance, energy and protection. Where do we get these from? The second part of the shanti mantra, reveals this.
Second Part of the Prayer
5: May Indra whose Glory is Great, bestow Well-Being on Us,
We seek blessings from Lord Indra, who is an ancient and a famous one, and also the head of all the Devas (akin to Arch angels). Indra is the head of 3 types of Devas, the Rupa, Arupa and Kama Devas. We plead that may he give us blessings of well-being, prosperity, happiness, and stability for our vehicles. All the Devas help in making us maintain good health and prosperity, under the leadership of Lord Indra.
6: May Pushan who is All-Knowing, bestow Well-Being on Us,
The source of all energy is Pooshaah. That is the Sun God. He is Vishwa-Vedaah or all knowing, highly intuitional and intellectual! In Gayatri mantra: bhurgas (bhargo or power) refers to Lord Sun, who provides power. May He Bless us.
7: May Tarkshaya who is a Circle of Protection, bestow Well-Being on Us,
Taaksharya means celestial, raised up, mystical, not clearly seen. He is like a celestial bird. Bird here means, being above ground, not physical, and flying all around. We are actually referring to Vayu, a Maha Deva, who is action oriented. May he Bless and protect us. He also works under Lord Indra.
8: May Brihaspati (also) bestow Well-Being on Us,
Bruhaspati is another Planetary God. He is the guru of Devas as He is a God of intellect and intelligence. Maha Deva Indra and other Devas are his students. He is also connected with uplifting humanity, giving them the power of discernment, leading to wisdom, purification and knowledge of Self.
Closing Sentence - ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti :
This line signifies that for those who have fully understood and follows this Mantra, there can be nothing other than complete peace of mind for them. That is emphasized thrice here as Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. A question will arise as to why the Mantra emphasizes peace three times. Here is a brief perspective for this three time chanting:
Our ancient scriptures tell us that one of the main objectives of life is to remove three kinds of obstacles or to eliminate three kinds of suffering:
"अथ त्रिविधदुःखात्यन्त निवृत्तिः अत्यन्त पुरुषार्थः" (1.1)
• Atha trividhadukhantyanta nivrittiH atyanta purusharthaH
"Permanent and complete elimination of the three-fold suffering is the supreme purpose of life".
Even though the three-fold suffering (dukkha) is not explicitly defined in the sutra, every commentator takes it to mean the following three forms of suffering:
1- Adhibhautic (worldly afflictions) - (originated in the physical, material beings) - dukkha due to external influences
2- Adhidaivik (theological) - (of divine origin) - dukkha due to act of God, cosmic, super natural, divine; and
3- Adhyatmik (metaphysical) - (created by ourselves) - dukkha pertaining to self-e.g., - genetic, congenital imbalance etc.
Therefore in the Shanthi Mantra , we pray for peace for the obstacles that come from unseen sources, known sources and from sources arising from within ourselves. Anyone with a clear understanding of these essentials will be free from all these three dukhas and will have nothing but absolute peace. That is the significance of repeating ‘Shanthi” three times.

முன்னுரை
எந்த ஓன்றையும் செய்யும்போது அதற்குரிய மனநிலை இருக்கப்பெறுவது இன்றியமையாது. எந்தகாரியத்தைச் செய்கிறோமோ அதற்குரிய மனநிலையை வரவழைத்துக் கொண்டு, அதன்பிறகு அந்தச்செயலில் ஈடுபடுவது சிறப்பான பலனை அளிக்கும். நமது கோயில்களில் பல பிராகாரங்கள் அமைந்திருப்பதன் காரணம் இதுவே. ஒவ்வொரு பிரகாரத்தில் சுற்றி வரும்போதும் மற்ற எண்ணங்களை எல்லாம் விட்டு, கடைசியாக கருவறையில் சென்று தெய்வத்தைத் தரிசிக்கும்போது, நம்மால் முழுமனதுடன் தெய்வசிந்தனையில் ஈடுபட முடிகிறது.
அதுபோல் அனுபூதிக்கருமூலமான உபநிஷதங்களை படிக்குமுன் நமது சிந்தனையை அவற்றுடன் ஒன்றிணைக்க சாந்தி மந்திரங்கள் உதவுகின்றன.
உபநிடதங்கள் படிக்கத் துவங்கும் முன்பு அந்தந்த உபநிடத்திற்குரிய சாந்தி மந்திரத்தை சொல்லிவிட்டுத்தான் துவங்க வேண்டும் என்பது மரபு. வேதாந்த சாத்திரங்கள் கேட்கும் போது நமக்கு வரும் தடைகளான சூழ்நிலைகளிலிருந்து வரும் தடை, இயற்கையிலிருந்து வரும் தடை, நம்மிடருந்து நமக்கே வரும் தடை ஆகிய மூன்று தடைகளை அமைதிப் படுத்துவதின் மூலம் நம்மை நாம் காத்துக்கொள்வதற்கு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுவதே சாந்தி மந்திரம் சொல்வதின் உட்பொருள்.

விளக்கவுரை
மந்திரத்தின் முதல் சொல்:
ॐ (ஓம்) OM:
இந்த சின்னம் பிரம்மனைக் குறிக்கும் ஒரு புனிதமான எழுத்து. முழுமையானது, சர்வ வல்லமை, எங்கும் நிறைந்தது, மற்றும் அனைத்து வெளிப்பட்டஇருப்புகளின் ஆதாரம். இது "பிரம்மன்" அல்லது கடவுள் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் இறுதி யதார்த்தத்தின் ஆழ்நிலை. தன்மையிலா, வடிவிலா, கால வரையரையிலா பரம்பொருளின் கேட்கக்கூடிய ஒலியின் வெளிப்பாடாகும். எனவே ஓம் என்பது கடவுளின் வெளிப்படாத (நிர்குண) மற்றும் வெளிப்படையான (சகுண) அம்சங்களைக் குறிக்கிறது. அதனால்தான் இது பிரணவம் என்றுஅழைக்கப்படுகிறது - அதாவது அது வாழ்க்கையில் ஊடுருவி, நமது பிராணன் அல்லது சுவாசத்தின் வழியாக ஓடுகிறது.

தொடக்கத்தில் ஓம் என்று உச்சரிப்பதன் மூலம், இவ்வுலக பௌதிகத்தளத்திலிருந்து மனத் தளத்திற்கு நம்மை உயர்த்திக் கொண்டோம். நாம்மனதளத்தில் இருக்கும்போது எது மங்களம் என்று நமக்குத் தெரியும். எனவே, காதுகளை சரிசெய்து, உள் செவிப்புலனை சுருதி சேர்த்து எதுமங்களகரமானது என்பதை அடையாளம் கண்டு, அதனை மட்டுமே கேட்கவேண்டும் என்பதே வேண்டுகோள்.
மங்கள வர்ணவடிவுகளை எம் விழிகள் காணட்டும்
அதேபோன்று அந்த மட்டத்தில் நாம் நம் அகக் கண்களைத் திறந்து, மங்களகரமானவற்றை மட்டுமே காட்சிப்படுத்த வேண்டும் அல்லது பார்க்கவேண்டுமென மன்றாடுகிறோம்.
திடம்படை பொறிபுலனுடை உடலுடன் அடிபணிந்து
இப்படி உயர்நிலையில் உள்செவிப் புலனும், அகக் கண்களும் கொண்டுமங்களகரமானவற்றை கேட்டு, கண்டு ஆரோக்கியமான, உறுதியான உடல்உன்னடி பணிந்து வணங்கி
இறையருள் வரை வாழ்நாளதனை இனிதே அடைவோமாக
தேவர்களால் ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட ஆயுட்காலத்தை நாம் அடைவோம் (அதாவதுசெலவிடுவோம்) (இதனால் நம் வாழ்வில் நிறைவைக் காணலாம்). அதாவதுஇறைவனளித்த வாழ்நாளை நாம், பக்தி, வழிபாடு, ஆன்மீகம் தழைத்திட பணிபுரிவது, மனிதகுலத்தின் நன்மைக்காக பாடுபடுவது, சரியானதை மட்டுமேகேட்பது, பார்ப்பது என முழுமையாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். வெளிப்பட்ட உலகில் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட நேரத்தை சிறந்த முறையில்பயன்படுத்தி, இவை அனைத்தையும் (வியாஷேமா) அடைவோமாக.
இந்த நிலைக்கு வர, நமக்கு உதவி, வழிகாட்டுதல், ஆற்றல் மற்றும் பாதுகாப்புதேவை. இவற்றை எங்கிருந்து பெறுகிறோம்? சாந்தி மந்திரத்தின் இரண்டாம்பகுதி இதை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.
மந்திரத்தின் இரண்டாம் பகுதி
பார்புகழ் அமரேசன் பெருநல் வாழ்வு வழங்கட்டும்
பெரிய மகிமை கொண்ட இந்திரன், எங்களுக்கு நல்வாழ்வை வழங்கட்டும். வின்னவரும், புகழ்பெற்றவருமான இந்திரனிடம் ஆசீர்வாதம் தேடுகிறோம். இந்திரன் அனைத்து தேவர்களின் (ரூப, அரூப மற்றும் காம தேவர்கள் ஆகிய 3 வகை தேவர்களுக்கும்) தலைவன். நமக்கு நல்வாழ்வு, செழிப்பு, மகிழ்ச்சி மற்றும்ஸ்திரத்தன்மை ஆகியவற்றை அவர் வழங்க வேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுகிறோம். இந்திரனின் தலைமையில் நல்ல ஆரோக்கியத்தையும் செழிப்பையும் பராமரிக்கஅனைத்து தேவர்களும் உதவுகிறார்கள்.
பேரறிவுடை பரிதி பெருநல் வாழ்வு வழங்கட்டும்
எல்லாம் அறிந்த பூஷன், எங்களுக்கு நல்வாழ்வை வழங்குவானாக.
அனைத்து ஆற்றலுக்கும் ஆதாரம் பூஷன். அதுதான் சூரியக் கடவுள். அவர்விஷ்வ-வேதா அல்லது அனைத்தையும் அறிந்த அறிவாளி. அவர் நம்மைஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக.
வட்டமிடும் விந்தைமிகுபுள் பெருநல் வாழ்வு வழங்கட்டும்
பாதுகாப்பு வட்டமாகிய தார்க்ஷயா, நமக்கு நல்வாழ்வைத் தரட்டும்.
தார்க்ஷயா என்பது வானுலக விந்தைமிகு ஒரு பறவை. உயரத்தில் வட்டமிடுவது. வட்டமிட்டுப் பறக்குமந்த தெய்வீகப் பறவை நம்மை பாதுகாப்பு வட்டத்தினுள்வைத்து நம்மைக் காக்கவும் என வேண்டுவது. பறவை என்பதைவிட இங்குஉண்மையில் வாயுதேவனைக் குறிப்பிடுவது என்று சில அறிஞர்கள்கூறுகிறார்கள்.
இந்திரனின் கீழ் பணிபுரியும் வாயு தேவன் நம்மை ஆசீர்வதித்து பாதுகாக்கட்டும்என்பது உட்பொருள்.
தேவகுரு பிரகஸ்பதி பெருநல் வாழ்வதனை வழங்கட்டும்
ப்ருஹஸ்பதி மற்றொரு கோளின் கடவுள். அவர் புத்தி மற்றும்புத்திசாலித்தனத்தின் கடவுள் என்பதால் அவர் தேவர்களின் குரு ஆவார். மகாதேவன் இந்திரன் மற்றும் பிற தேவர்கள் அவருடைய மாணவர்கள். அவர்மனிதகுலத்தை உயர்த்துவதோடு, அவர்களுக்கு பகுத்தறியும் ஆற்றலைக்கொடுத்து, ஞானம், சித்தி மற்றும் பகுத்தறிவுக்கு இட்டுச் செல்கிறார். அந்தபிருஹஸ்பதியும் எங்களுக்கு நல்வாழ்வை வழங்கட்டும்.
மந்திரத்தின் கடைசி சொற்றொடர்:
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Om Shaantih Shanthi Shaantih
இந்த இன்றியமையாதவற்றைப் பற்றிய தெளிவான புரிதல் உள்ள எவருக்கும்முழுமையான அமைதி, முழுமையான அமைதி, முழுமையான அமைதியைத் தவிரவேறு எதுவும் இருக்காது என்பதே இந்த வரி.
நீங்கள் கவனிப்பது போல், சாந்தி (அமைதி) என்ற வார்த்தையை மூன்று முறைஉச்சரிப்பது இறுதி வரியாகும். சில சமயங்களில் கேட்கப்படும் கேள்வி - சாந்திஏன் மூன்று முறை ஜபிக்கப்படுகிறது? அதற்கு முக்கியத்துவம் உள்ளதா? நாம்ஏன் மூன்று முறை சாந்தியை ஜபிக்கிறோம் என்பதற்கான சுருக்கமானவிளக்கம் இங்கே.
மூன்று வகையான தடைகளை நீக்குவது அல்லது மூன்று வகையானதுன்பங்களை நீக்குவது என்பது வாழ்க்கையின் முக்கிய நோக்கங்களில் ஒன்றுஎன்று நமது பண்டைய நூல்கள் நமக்குச் சொல்கின்றன.
மூன்று வகை துன்பங்கள் வெளிப்படையாக வரையறுக்கப்படவில்லைஎன்றாலும், ஒவ்வொரு வர்ணனையாளரும் பின்வரும் மூன்று வகையானதுன்பங்களைக் குறிக்கின்றனர்:
1. ஆதிதைவிகா (தெய்வீக தோற்றம்) - கடவுளின், இயற்கையின் செயல்காரணமாக வரும் துன்பங்கள்.
2. அதிபௌதிகா (உடல், ஜட உயிரினங்களில் உருவானது) - வெளிப்புறதாக்கங்கள் காரணமாக வரும் துன்பங்கள்
3. அத்யாத்மிகா (நாமே உருவாக்கியது) - உட் நோய், மனப்பிரச்சனைகள் முலம்வரும் துன்பங்கள்
இந்த சாந்தி மந்திரத்தின் உட்கருத்தை தெளிவாகப் புரிந்து அனுபவிக்கும் எவரும், இம்மூன்று வகை துன்பங்களிலிருந்து விடுபட்டு மனம் சஞ்சலமின்றிஅமைதி அடையும் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தத்தான் ‘சாந்தி’ என்று மூன்று முறைசொல்வதன் முக்கியத்துவம்.
