When we have an urgent need or a case where help is required, we go to meet an important person (may be our superior, teacher, spiritual leader, parents) and want to get assistance/answers to our needs. To manage the time that is allotted for this interaction, they normally ask us to present the case “sweet and short” within the time allotted. We present the case, the discussions are over and we return back to our base.
What has been our experience in this endeavour? Most of us come back with a mixed feeling; “OMG, it was too short. I missed a few points that would have given better impact. I couldn’t crystallise my thinking. I could have done better” - typical reactions from our side. “ What is this? He came to me seeking help. He can’t even present his case properly. He was so vague. He was confused” - typical reactions from the other side. Don’t we see these sorts of discussions often in our lives?
After surrendering to the Guru to attain higher spiritual knowledge, there is much to learn from him. Guru's time is precious. Whether he will accept me or not depends very much on the first question I ask. One grain is enough to test the readiness level of a pot of cooked rice.
To ask such a question that will contain the essence of all my doubts, I have to deliberate internally within myself, constantly think about those doubts and gradually refine my thoughts and extract the essence. There are no short cuts.
Raja Rishi Janaka Maharaj, who surrendered to the Guru, presents the extracted essence as the first question in the first sloka, which consists of three parts. These three questions he asked are enough for us to know the advances that he has made in the field of Vedanta and spirituality. Let us now examine that question.

Janaka seeks:
“Teach me this, Oh Lord!
How can knowledge (Jnana) be acquired?
How can Liberation (Mukti) come ?
How is renunciation achieved?”
The question that Janaka asked is in three parts. We will examine the first part now.
Knowledge
As an advanced student of Vedanta having excelled in Karma Yoga and living life of a king as per the Sanatan Dharma, he has all the knowledge and access to all the knowledge that he needs to run an empire. What knowledge then is King Janaka seeking here in his question to Ashtavakra?
To acquire any knowledge means to eradicate ignorance. When ignorance is removed, what remains is knowledge. Essentially Janaka is seeking to remove ignorance? Ignorance about what? Advaita scholars even today discuss at length about the two major fields of “knowledge and ignorance”. Here is a quick take from a layman’s perspective.
Ignorance essentially involves two aspects viz., non-apprehension and misapprehension. About what is Janaka seeking to remove both non-apprehension and misapprehension?
He is talking about non-apprehension of a rope and misapprehension of a snake. Wonder what these two objects have to do with our subject? Let us wait for our full study.
At this point of time we will only take it for granted that King Janaka is seeking knowledge on non-apprehension and misapprehension about himself.
“That KNOWLEDGE that knows both that knowledge and that ignorance is the Knowledge that is free of ignorance” says Swami Omkarananda in Tamil.
Answer to the very famous question, the question that has been bothering philosophers over centuries “Who am I” is that KNOWLEDGE that Janaka is seeking.
That KNOWLEDGE is the knowledge of the Self (“Atma Jnana/Brahma Jnana”). This is what King Janaka is seeking guidance for, from Sage Ashtavakra.
We will see the next part of his question in the next Newsletter. Until then…..

God Bless
